Why Optical Size Is the Axis Nobody Asks For and Everyone Needs

Every variable font demo leads with a weight slider, because dragging from thin to black is the most obviously satisfying thing to show a room. Optical size gets a fraction of the attention, and it’s the axis actually solving a centuries-old typographic problem.

Metal type used to be cut separately for each size, because a 6pt face and a 72pt face need different proportions to read correctly — thicker hairlines and more open counters at small sizes, finer detail at large ones. Digital type mostly abandoned that discipline; a single outline just got scaled. An optical-size axis puts the discipline back, automatically, inside one file.

Licensing

Licensing is per-project, not per-seat.

Every typeface ships as a single variable font file with a straightforward licence — no seat counting, no font-loading service required.
